Painting as a problem of belief.
Sebastian Nasta (b. 1991, Romania) is a contemporary painter based in Cluj-Napoca. His practice examines the authority assigned to images and the unstable relationship between realism, belief and perception.
Rather than approaching hyperrealism as a representational goal, Nasta uses technical precision as a critical strategy. A convincing image establishes certainty first; interruption, erasure, masking, reflection or exposed support then destabilize that certainty.
Oil painting is central to this process because of its historical associations with permanence, authority, memory and representation. Across the work, realism becomes a paradox: the more persuasive the image appears, the more its disruptions ask what an image can preserve, conceal, construct or erase.
